Reconstruction of schools and help for traumatized Children
Project Number: 5014

In recent years, Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province has suffered significantly from humanitarian disasters. In October 2005, a major earthquake devastated the region, killing 75,000 people and leaving an estimated 3.5 million homeless, a situation made all the more serious by the impending onset of severe winter weather. In 2009, severe flooding led to more death and displacement of an already suffering population.
NWFP’s population of 17 million people has also seen its share of problems with Islamist and tribal militant groups. Following an short-lived peace deal with the government, militants spread further into the province. The Pakistani military responded with a massive military offensive. The renewed conglict affected Swat, Buner, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Bajour, and Shangalal Districts. The resulting displacement of 2 million people within the space of a few months was one of the most rapid and large-scale internal displacements in recent history.
As millions were forced to leave their homes, whole economic systems collapsed. Crops, merchandise, fields, and equipment were destroyed. Public infrastructure, the core element to the provision of many basic social services, was decimated. Skilled individuals – teacher, administrators, and medical personnel – fled the fighting and the militant advance. Particularly hard hit were educational institutions.
